James Street News

There is no doubt that July 2008 will be remembered for World Youth Day.

After incredible preparation by the WYD Committee over the past 18 months, we all enjoyed the fruits of their labour in the Days in the Diocese followed by the big gig in Sydney.

At James St. it was our great pleasure to welcome Emmet, Stephen and Tim from L’Arche Kapiti.  It was a great joy to spend time with them, get to know them, share stories and celebrate together.

We all appreciated and enjoyed the times of celebration together especially the Welcome, the Sharing Night with the Samoans and the great Bush Dance at Marist College.  Scott and Stephen represented James Street in Sydney and, from their many stories, it was a great experience to be part of World Youth Day.

What a wonderful evening at the movies to see ‘Mamma Mia’.  We all had a great time to share a fun evening with so many friends and supporters of L’Arche. Thanks especially to Megan and Rosemary for all their hard work in making the evening such a great success.

Gemma, Ron, Scott and Neryl have become regulars at the Hellenic Club on Sunday afternoons where they have been foot-tapping to a live band and getting to know the other regulars.

As we go to print, Scott and Gemma, together with their Accompaniers Ian and Claire du Sartel, have headed to Mulgoa for Sister Act 3 (Accompaniers’ Retreat starring Eileen Glass & Catherine Carah).  We look forward to many stories upon their return.

Sladen Place News

Life has been full of comings and goings at Sladen Place.

We farewelled Lena and Madi, vowing to stay in touch through email.  We have also welcomed Laure, who will spend a month with us to gain experience at L’Arche after being at World Youth Day.  We are eagerly looking forward to Annie Duke starting with us in the middle of August.

For Trish, the highlight of the last month was visiting Pegasus (Riding for the Disabled).  In her words “I went to Pegasus. These are the names of the horses I saw and patted: Emma, Jack, Queenie, Spinner, Bart, Dallas, Tully, Sparkles, Redjack. I saw children riding horses. There was a lady named Mary there - she was cutting a horse’s mane. I touched the horses, they felt soft. One came up to me. It had a big drink of water. I saw one horse rolling in the paddock. I had a really good time. Afterwards Elaine and I went and had lunch at Chifley with Keith, Kaylene and Theresa”.

Liz was delighted to represent L’Arche at the World Youth Day celebrations in Sydney.  In her words“It was magic, I saw the Pope.  I waved to him.  We stayed in the Assistants’ house in Sydney.  We went on the buses and the trains.  I went to Darling Harbour.  I was MC at the Catechesis at the Conference Room.  There were lots of young people.  I loved listening to different Bishops’ talks and I loved listening to Nathan and Gemma and their journey with L’Arche.  It was very interesting.  I met new Assistants and people from Germany and people from America.  I saw some of the Sydney Community, especially Donna and Bonfire.  It was magic for me to meet so many people from different nations.  They spoke different languages, like German and Italian.  I loved seeing other communities practicing for their plays”.

For Kerry, life has been a little quieter.  She was very sad to say farewell to Viola at the Curtin Milk Bar as she has been a frequent customer and become a good friend over the many years Viola has been there.  Kerry also enjoyed a weekend at the coast with her Mum.
